Ingredients
- sliced onions such as yellow, white, or Vidalia onions
- garlic powder
- salt and pepper
- brown rice flour
- cooking oil such as olive oil or avocado oil
How to make Gluten-Free French Fried Onions
- Slice the Onions: Peel and thinly slice the onions with a sharp knife or mandoline. Separating the slices into rings will help with even coating and frying.
- Prepare the Coating: In a bowl, mix the brown rice flour with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Coat the Onions: Toss the onion slices in the flour mixture until they are well coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- Heat the Skillet: In a skillet, heat oil in a pan over medium heat, just enough to coat the bottom. Make sure the oil is hot but not smoking. Too much oil can cause the onions to be soggy.
- Fry the Onions: Place the coated onion rings in a single layer in the hot skillet. Cook until the onions become golden brown and crispy, flipping them occasionally to ensure even cooking. Cook in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan, so the onions get crispy.
- Drain Excess Oil: Once the onions are crispy and golden, use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess hot oil.
- Season Again if Desired: While the onions are still hot, you can sprinkle them with a bit more salt or your favorite seasoning for an extra burst of flavor.

Gluten-Free French Fried Onions
Ingredients
- 2 cups onions (thinly sliced and halved)
- 1/4 cup brown rice flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil
- 1/2 traspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Peel and slice the onion in half, using a sharp knife. Slice thinly and evenly, about 1/16 of an inch. I recommend using a mandoline to slice the onions and then cut the slices in half.
- In a small mixing bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Coat the onion rings in the flour mixture.
- Heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the onions in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes, flipping them occasionally to ensure even cooking. Repeat with remaining onions, working in batches.
- Once the onions are crispy and golden, use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer them to a plate lined with a paper towel. Repeat with remaining onions.
