A delicious low-carb, high-protein smoothie

I just crave a good smoothie recipe in the morning, especially ones that are sweet with a creamy texture and a rich chocolatey mocha taste. Or anytime I’m craving sweets!

Made with superfoods such as raw cacao powder, cottage cheese, and collagen powder, this smoothie is a powerhouse of protein and antioxidants.

What are collagen peptides?

Collagen peptides are small, bioavailable chains of amino acids derived from collagen protein. They are highly digestible and can be easily absorbed by the body, making them a popular ingredient in many smoothie recipes.

Collagen peptides are essential for maintaining the health of our skin, hair, nails, joints, and bones. They promote skin elasticity, hydration, and a youthful appearance while also supporting bone density, joint flexibility, and muscle mass.

Ingredients Needed for Chocolate Espresso Collagen Smoothie

Ingredients of chocolate espresso collagen smoothie on a table.
  • natural cottage cheese
  • vital proteins collagen peptides
  • cacao powder (not cocoa powder)
  • instant espresso powder
  • cinnamon
  • gluten-free oats (optional for extra fiber)
  • unsweetened almond milk
  • monk fruit sweetener
  • cce

Ingredient substitutions

Gluten-free oats: If you’re strictly keto, you can omit this ingredient. This recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of rolled oats which is about 7g of carbs. If you’re not low-carb, try a frozen banana for extra fiber.

Almond Milk: This coffee smoothie recipe is made with dairy-free milk but regular milk can also be used.

Espresso: While I love using instant espresso powder to save time, you can opt for a half cup of cold brewed coffee. Just swap it with the plant milk so it doesn’t come out too thin of a consistency. If you don’t want a coffee flavor in your smoothie omit it altogether.

Ice: You can freeze cold brew in ice cube trays to make coffee ice cubes to use in place of regular ice.

Sweetener: To keep this recipe low-carb, I always opt for monk fruit sweetener. You can also use a low-glycemic sweetener like agave. If you are not concerned about carbs, maple syrup, and honey are both good options.

Add-ins: Natural peanut butter, almond butter, and cashew butter pair best with chocolate flavor. Not to mention they’re super healthy fats and perfect for keto lovers. If you’re not a fan of nut butter, try flax seeds or chia seeds. Both are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. A splash of vanilla extract can boost the flavor as well!
