How to Cut Sweet Potato Fries

Wash and peel the sweet potatoes: Start by rinsing the sweet potatoes under cold water to remove any dirt. Then, using a vegetable peeler, carefully peel the skin off the sweet potatoes.

Trim the ends: Once peeled, trim both ends of the sweet potatoes to create a flat surface for cutting.

Slice into planks: Lay the sweet potatoes flat on the cutting board and cut them into 1/4-inch thick slices. These will be the planks from which you’ll cut the fries.

Cut into fries: Take each sweet potato plank and stack them together. Now, cut the stacked planks into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide. These will be your sweet potato fries.

Optional: If you prefer longer fries, you can leave the sweet potato planks intact and cut them into longer strips.

How to Cook Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (193.333°C). Although not all air fryers require preheating, I recommend preheating to ensure the best results.

While the air fryer is preheating, toss the sweet potato fries with oil and seasonings in a bowl making sure they’re evenly coated. If using, coat with arrowroot powder or cornstarch.

Then place the sweet potatoes into the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd them. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may have to cook these in batches.

Flip the fries halfway to ensure they are cooking evenly.

Tips for Success

Cut the fries evenly: For even cooking, try to cut the sweet potato fries into uniform sizes. This will prevent some fries from becoming overcooked while others are undercooked.

Choose the right sweet potatoes: Look for firm, fresh sweet potatoes with smooth skins. Try to select sweet potatoes that are similar in size to ensure even cooking.

Adjust cooking time and temperature: Cooking time and temperature may vary depending on the air fryer model and the thickness of the fries. Keep an eye on the first batch and adjust accordingly for subsequent batches.

Preheat the air fryer: Always preheat the air fryer before adding the sweet potato fries. This ensures that the fries cook evenly and get crispy on the outside.

Don’t overcrowd the basket: To achieve the best results, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. Leaving space between the fries allows hot air to circulate and ensures even cooking.

Shake the basket: During the cooking process, shake the air fryer basket a couple of times to ensure that the fries cook evenly on all sides.

Storage and Reheating

To store sweet potato fries, let them cool to room temperature, then place them in an airtight container or resealable bag and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days.

To reheat, use an air fryer, oven, or toaster oven for crispy results. Spread the fries in a single layer on a baking sheet or tray, then reheat at around 400°F (200°C) for a few minutes until they are hot and crispy.

Avoid reheating multiple times to maintain its best texture.

While microwaving is faster, it may result in softer fries rather than maintaining their crispiness.

Seasoning Ideas

Classic: Toss the sweet potato fries with olive oil, salt, and freshly ground black pepper for a simple and flavorful option.

Cajun: Sprinkle the fries with Cajun seasoning, which typically includes paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and thyme, for a spicy and zesty kick.

Garlic-Parmesan: Coat the fries in minced garlic, grated Parmesan cheese, olive oil, salt, and parsley for a savory and cheesy combination.

Smoky Paprika: Use a blend of sweet and smoked paprika, along with a pinch of cumin and salt, to add a smoky and earthy flavor to the fries.

Maple-Cinnamon: Drizzle the fries with maple syrup and sprinkle ground cinnamon for a sweet and comforting taste.

Herbed Butter: Melt butter and mix it with chopped fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, and sage. Toss the fries in the herbed butter for a fragrant and savory experience.
